Hypnagogia

New page

Hypnagogia (also known as the 'hypnagogic state') is the stage of being between 'wakefulness' and 'sleep.' It has a twin, hypnopompia, which is the onset of sleep and wakefulness.

Sensations
During hypnagogia, many bizarre sensations have been reported.

Hypnagogic Hallucinations
These hallucinations are seen, heard or felt before drifting off to sleep. They can take form in many ways. Examples are:
*Visuals can vary randomly, from geometric shapes to flashing lights. Sometimes, they can be fully blown objects and can take the form in humans or animals. Spiders, snakes, eyes, turtles and people are commonly seen along with one's vision, and can sometimes be frightening to the subject.
*Auditory hallucinations are sounds that the subject thinks they are hearing. Common types of this hallucination is that they hear the phone ring, their name being called and sometimes a song can be heard. More commonly, the subject may be imagining a conversation and part of that conversation can be heard in real life. This is known as a memory fragment, false memory or a memory impression. This type of hallucination is often heard when the subject is close to sleep.
*Tactile hallucinations vary in many ways. These forms of hallucinations can feel as if someone is touching you, punching you or even sitting on you. The most common form of a tactile hallucination is the hypnagogic (sometimes known as hypnic) jerk, which gives the subject the impression they have just fell into their bed from a height.

Sleep Paralysis
Sleep Paralysis can be experienced after sleep or before sleep. After sleep, the paralysis persists if the muscles fail to unparalyse (your muscles shut down during REM sleep to stop you acting out your dreams). During this paralysis, the subject is paralyzed and cannot move anything at all. They have little control over their breathing and eyes. At this time frightening hallucinations can be experienced, and a sense of dread is felt. The subject also feels as if they are not alone (someone is in the room with them). Approximately 6% of the world's population experience this every night.

Dream chaining, or DEILD (Dream Exit Induced Lucid Dream) is used to induce lucid dreams. This technique can be used to have multiple lucid dreams each night. Dream chaining is a WILD (Wake Initiated Lucid Dream) variant, however this technique can only be done after a few hours sleep. This technique relies on the fact that after awakening, your brain is still partially asleep. If you manage to DEILD or dream chain, think of the awakening as 'taking a break from dreaming.'

First of all, you must go to bed. You cannot do a DEILD without going to bed beforehand. If it is done before bed, it is known as a Wake Initiated Lucid Dream (or WILD for short). Set your alarm clock for about 5 hours (alternatively, if you have brief awakenings during the night there is no need to set an alarm clock), and then go to sleep. The purpose for setting your alarm clock for 5 hours is that you'll wake up when your REM (Rapid Eye Movement) cycle kicks in. REM is when lucid dreams occurs, so it is a fundamental rule that you must set your alarm clock for approximately 5 hours (you may need to adjust slightly, because sometimes REM cycles can occur at different times. 3-6 hours is an ideal time).

Dream chaining is used to induce lucid dreams.

+

Dream chaining, or DEILD (Dream Exit Induced Lucid Dream) is used to induce lucid dreams. This technique can be used to have multiple lucid dreams each night. Dream chaining is a WILD (Wake Initiated Lucid Dream) variant, however this technique can only be done after a few hours sleep.

Having a DEILD takes little preparation; and when done correctly, it can prove to be a very reliable lucid induction technique.

+

+

+

Waking up
+

After 5 hours of sleep, you will be awoken by your alarm clock. When awake, do not move a muscle. This may take some practice to ensure you do not move. Wait until your alarm clock stops. You are now ready for DEILD. After your alarm clock stops, lay still with your eyes closed and concentrate. After about 30 seconds (sometimes can be fast as 10 seconds) you will enter sleep paralysis. At this point you may experience frightening hypnagogic hallucinations, but you need to remind yourself that nothing can hurt you.

Transferring sleep paralysis into a dream
+

There are many ways to convert sleep paralysis into a dream. Here are some of the methods that are used:

+

+

+

*Visualize yourself in a scene (this can be anything - for example, visualize yourself walking around your house), and focus on all five senses. If done correctly you can 'hop' into that scene, and complete DEILD.

+

*Wait until sleep paralysis has run its course. After a minute or two, sleep paralysis will have supposedly 'died dowwn' and you may have entered a dream. Sometimes a DEILD will start with a false awakening, so you must always do a reality check when 'getting up.'

+

*Concentrate on the tactile sensations sleep paralysis creates for you. Sometimes you may feel as if you are falling - you can use this to enter a DEILD.

+

+

Once in a DEILD, you may do as you wish! DEILDs are oftenly more vivid than normal DILDs and MILDs. If you wake up, you can repeat the technique and have as many dreams as you want in one night.

induction Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (often abbreviated to MILD) is a technique developed by The Lucidity Institute as a method for reliably inducing lucid dreams. It was primarily created as a form of Dream Initiated Lucid Dreams, but the principle can also be used for Wake Initiated Lucid Dreams. It involves setting an intention to recognize the dreamstate (as a form of self-affirmation), often by telling oneself to look for dream signs, or by ensuring that the subject will do a Reality Check. These affirmations are commonly known as mantras, which is a phrase that is constantly repeated. In this case, a mantra is repeated in order to achieve a Lucid dream.

A lucid dreamer may also just transform for the heck of it, to see what it feels like, or if they have some sort of liking for whatever they are morphing into. Usually these people focus on what the form feels like, and the experience can be unforgettable (figuratively). The dreamer may morph into a fictional creature as well as a real animal, and the only real limit is their imagination. The creature does not even have to be known to anyone else, as long as they know what it is they can become it.
